URBAN CO-HOUSING

This project examines the community connection between individual units as density overwhelms an existing neighborhood. As the single family communal front porch is erased and replaced by larger, high density structures, the opportunity for social street front interaction is diminished. The active, dynamic edge of the street is being transformed into tall, zero setback, non-descript planes that reference ‘walled communities’. Our proposal is led by three couples, that are lifelong friends, who are committed to sharing a lot together. The communal space in inverted to the center of the lot as the main place of gathering while the disappearing ‘private backyards’ of the old neighborhood are reinterpreted into elevated private decks. Separation and overlaps become architectural inquires on how we celebrate degrees of publicness and privateness.
