CONCRETE VASE
The process in which the base was constructed is representative of a budding flower. Combining elements of architecture and sculpture, a piece of cardboard was organized into a template then bent and folded onto itself, creating the mold for the concrete pour. Like the flower, the concrete waited to emerge until the curing process was complete. Once the concrete hardened, the soft, protective shell was shed, uncovering a solid and smooth form. We wanted a flower which was, on its own, a sculptural element – the ‘bird of paradise’, more-so than any of the other options, fit this description. The flower is angular and delicate, piercing and soft, with a multiplicity of colors that made its selection an obvious choice for us.
