The Helibarn Studio outbuilding is located across Lonesome Dove Road from the main residence on Ranch 1. The schematic design includes approximately 2890 square feet across three levels (860 upper level, 610 garage/entry, 1420 helicopter storage). The project was inspired by the precedent images which include agrarian Montana barn structures and contemporary versions of barn inspired structures. The design team’s goal is to fuse the strong mountain / agrarian material palette with a structure that speaks to the unique program of helicopter storage. It is important to maintain consistency within the context of the Yellowstone Club, while subtly peaking the interest of the occasional viewer.
The Helibarn Studio is located on axis from the helicopter approach as suggested from experienced pilot consultants. The project buries itself into the hillside, which diminishes the scale from the garage / drive approach. Conceptually the helicopter storage space ‘grounds’ itself like a rock while the upper level / lower garage share a continuous roof with overhangs that ‘lift off or float’. The glass approach on the landing pad side is meant to act as a beacon – to assist with navigation and landing. The lines and materials of the building are interpretations of the utilitarian equipment storage buildings of simple wood and metal compositions. Heavy timber materials are employed for the framework / structure to give additional heartiness to the building form.
