TRAFFIC LIGHT

Given the open nature of the request for proposal, Tomecek Studio took an exploratory stance to find unique ways to implement phenomenological experiences that align with the culture of our studio.

The proposal response explores Acrylic tubes that are utilized to passively introduce light into the underpass space from the road above. As moving traffic alters the lighting quality, conditions within the underpass reflect the dynamic city. Artificial lighting in the floor divides circulation to ensure ample space for directional traffic within the underpass. The density of the artificial lights represents the inverse of the rods positioned overhead. Surface texturing works with the artificial lights to further delineate space. With each side of the underpass catering to a distinct flow of traffic, the textured surface marks the separate lanes for pedestrian and bike traffic. At grade the rods collect themselves in a way that maximizes the infiltration of light near the center of the underpass. The proposal limits the interface with the street above to minimize complexity.
